The U.S. government is seeking public input on a plan to sell more leases for offshore oil and gas drilling. Using your voice and submitting a comment is an important way to help protect our coasts and communities from the risks of offshore drilling.

The Department of the Interior (DOI), which is responsible for offshore drilling leasing decisions, recently released its proposed 2023-2028 National Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Leasing program, or the Five-Year Plan. 

This proposed Five-Year Plan includes 11 potential new lease sales, several in the Gulf of Mexico and one off of Alaska. It also includes an alternative option that would schedule no new lease sales for offshore drilling.

More leasing poses unnecessary and unacceptable risks — including spills and health impacts — to our ocean habitats, fisheries and wildlife, coastal economies, vulnerable communities, and our national public resources.  The proposed Five-Year Plan, if adopted, could also lock the United States into decades of additional carbon pollution, further driving climate change and harming the ocean and freshwater systems we all rely on.
