Protect Wildlife and Ecosystems Now and Into the Future
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act (ESA), one of the most effective conservation laws in the United States. The ESA has saved hundreds of species from extinction and continues to protect and preserve some of our most beloved animals and plants. It has also helped to create a better understanding of how human activities can impact the environment and how we can work together to protect it. Perhaps most importantly, this anniversary is a reminder that conservation efforts are essential for stemming the worsening impacts of climate change, protecting biodiversity, and preserving our planet for ourselves and future generations.
Please join us in protecting endangered species by signing the petition to President Biden!
Letter Text:
Dear President Biden,
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a vital tool for safeguarding species that are at the risk of extinction. The ESA has been responsible for protecting around 99% of species from going extinct. This year, we celebrate the ESA's 50th Anniversary, a significant milestone that marks the ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and wildlife protection. However, there is more work to be done. According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, worldwide, around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, and the average amount of native species has fallen by as much as 33 percent. As we celebrate this milestone, it is important that we not only reflect on the progress made but also the work ahead for protecting our nation's endangered species and their habitats.
Therefore, as we reflect on the previous 50 years and contemplate the challenges that will be faced in the next 50, we ask that you take the following actions to ensure the successful future of our plant and animal species.
Lastly, in taking these actions, the federal government must prioritize consulting with Indigenous communities and honoring federal trust obligations to Tribal governments. To truly be a success, this approach must recognize and incorporate Indigenous and other traditional sources of knowledge to support conservation and biodiversity, safeguard the rights and needs of Indigenous peoples, and ensure social equity and justice in decision making.
Combating the global biodiversity crisis and restoring our natural heritage will require swift, bold and visionary action from the Biden Administration. Thank you for your attention.
